CRAFTS

Indonesian arts and crafts display the exotic culture and traditions of this South East Asian country. The diversity of the ethnic groups, religion and the influence of the neighboring countries has resulted in the extraordinary art and craft forms of Indonesia. As the traditions and culture of each of the islands of the archipelago are different the art and crafts of Indonesia are also varied.

The thriving tourism industries of Indonesia have adequately used the art and crafts of the country. There is a growing demand of the art and crafts of Indonesia in the western world. The art forms of Indonesia are not limited to handicrafts but performing arts is a big thing in this country.

The tribal culture and traditions of Indonesia are well reflected in its art forms. The crafts are versatile and each region has its own form of art displaying the regional culture. Symbolism is an important part of Indonesian art forms.

The ancient beliefs and traditions still exist in the art forms. Influence of China and India are very much prominent in the art and crafts of Indonesia. Later Indonesian art and craft was also influenced by the Arabs and the Europeans who visited the islands. The art and crafts were patronized since the ancient period by the ruler and with the change of dynasties and rule things hardly changed.

Indonesia is known for its handicrafts, which vary from traditional and crafts to modern arts. The choices are remarkable: puppets, masks, woodcarvings, stone and metal statues, gold and silver work, basketry, pottery, textiles, painting, and other contemporary arts.

Indonesian arts and crafts are not primarily made to be souvenirs. For Indonesians they serve as part of social and cultural identity. The islands of Lombok is well known for its earthenware pottery. The Javanese are known for their batik, art on fabric. The Asmat of Irian Jaya have the most impressive primitive art on woodcarvings.

Arts and crafts are also used as a manifestation of spiritual beliefs. Wood statues are placed in the homes of newly married couples in the hope for happiness. Ceremonial masks are used to protect against evil spirits. Functional object, such as basketry used for fishing traps, hats, and containers, can also be art objects, as can pottery bowls and water pitchers. Woodcarvings are used for decoration on fine furniture. Traditional jewelry made of gold and silver is customary as a bride gift.
